“Your teaching was fresh and new! It gave us lots to think about. Please come and stay longer so you can teach us more!” This is what a church leader told us as he drove us back to our hotel from the Bible training center we had been training in last October. What was this teaching? Not only how to rekindle intimacy in your marriage relationships, but also how to create intimacy with God and other believers through small groups. We present this tool as a way for churches to reach outside its walls into the community including the next generation.

“How do we keep the young people at our church? How do we help them believe with their heart, not just their head?” This is the question that Pastor Xu and her husband, Pastor Li, asked of us. They have faithfully served their church in Sichuan Province for the past 25 years. Back then, their church had only about 30 to 40 members. Today, up to 600 people attend their church on a Sunday morning. However, many of the attenders are older. In fact, they told me that 2/3 of their congregation is over the age of 60 and 1/3 of their congregation is in their 40’s and 50’s.

We are sitting in the back seat of a bright yellow VW Polo. A dear sister, who is a participant in China Partner’s training in Hubei Province, graciously drives us back to our hotel after the day’s lessons. She is in her 40’s, a Mary Kay consultant by trade and a leader at her church.

I am driving in a rickety mini van (they don’t build these kind in the US; it’s way too small!) on my way to the local church in the countryside of Sichuan.  The driver has just stopped to pick up another woman; she is attending the training we are giving this week.  Sister Liu starts talking; her pitch gets higher with each statement…now she has completely turned around—sitting on her knees—facing us.  She doesn’t care that she is not wearing seat belts.  The van keeps bumping us up and down as it runs over potholes on the country road.  She doesn’t care; she is too excited to tell her st

I don’t know about you but I LOVE breakfast. I love making it. Even better, I love eating it. I’m an early bird; always have been. I don’t know what it is but there is something special about the first part of the day. And there is nothing better to me than to start the day by eating breakfast.

Are you a worry worm? Do you worry about the future? Do you worry about the past…such as worrying about what could be different if you just would have made a different decision? Why do we worry so much?

I believe it’s because of several reasons.

• It’s about me!
You see, I want to be in charge and in control. When I feel out of control I get nervous because I don’t know how things will work out. Since I’m NOT in control I worry. In a way, I’m saying to God, “I’m in charge!”

• I don’t realize that it is all about God and His will.

“I believe in myself,” said the young teenager after asking several young people, “who do you believe in?” This is a common answer by young people in Mainland China today. They don't believe in anything…except for themselves.

A few years ago I noticed this huge church, a cathedral, in down town Marburg, Germany. As I walked inside I heard a beautiful choir singing. As I listened more closely I recognized the words; they were singing the “beatitudes” of Jesus…in German. How beautiful. Their voices rang out through out this magnificent building. It was glorious. I thought to myself, “good theology.” I felt His presence.

Training Christian leaders is a primary need of the Church in China

I just read these beautiful verses found in John 15:10-11. Jesus says, “If you keep my commandments you will abide in my love just as I have kept my father's commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may remain in you and that your joy may be full."

Several observations:
